Deployed during the War of Revenge alongside Kitsune and other pokegirls, this canine breed of pokegirl assisted in camouflaging maneuvers for pokegirl troops, and were known to be decent at infiltration. However, more powerful and specialized pokegirls soon out shown the breed. These pokegirls, based off of the raccoon dog, soon found their way into human hands and are noted in the Edo League to be the first pokegirl to be captured and tamed on a widespread basis.

Although these pokegirls bear a resemblance to the extremely rare pre-sukebe animal known as the raccoon, their animal base is actually the Japanese raccoon dog, which is in the canine family. The breed ranges from the close to human end of the Near Human spectrum, to the very animalistic Not Very Near Human animorph. All members of the breed sport a long grey tail, which may or may not have black markings of rings or horizontal stripes as well as a pair of rounded grey ears on their heads that sometimes sport black tips. Of the more animalistic members of the breed, muzzles may be slight or full, though body fur is normally a slate grey with slight variations into darker shades or browns. Patterned across the body is a darker shade of fur, usually black, that runs normally from the breed's hands and feet and may even extend across the entire front of their body. This dark pattern extends to the most notable feature of the breed, as most furred Tanuki also sport a black 'mask' of fur over their eyes, making many humans outside of the Edo League mistake the breed's base as a raccoon. On average, this ghostly rock breed stands around 5' to 5'6'', or just under two meters tall, their bust averages in the B cup range, though smaller and larger instances have been recorded. Occasionally, the close to human individuals of this canine breed also sport darker skin around their eyes, mimicking the 'mask' that the breed is noted for.

Almost universally, Tanuki are friendly and mischievous pokegirls, holding a reputation alongside Kitsune and Trixies as good natured pranksters. The breed generally has a healthy sense of humor as well, enjoying a good joke even if it's at the pokegirl's expense. When in a harem with other prankster pokegirls, the two pokegirls usually either team up or become rivals, though this can be stopped by the tamer. A majority of the breed have also shown a love of food, either by entering into the cooking profession if allowed or by eating as much as their tamer allows. A word of warning to tamers, allowing this breed to overeat does result in obesity.

While this canine breed in general dislikes direct conflict (most have shown a tendency to take cover and attack from a distance) they can become highly capable battlers. Using the Turn Stone technique, this breed transforms into a stone statue of themselves made of incredibly dense rock, effectively making the breed as resistant to damage as a Damsel. Unfortunately, this ultimate defense of the breed comes at a price, as the Tanuki can neither move nor attack at all in this state. With the breed's other abilities, they can be quite dangerous.

The breed's love of food can come into play during taming, as many Tanuki have shown a love of food play. Other than this quirk the breed shows a myriad of taming preferences, though for those who dislike pain, their stone technique stops any forceful applications, much to the dismay of pokegirls like the Domina line. Furred members of the breed need to be careful during food play, as more than one experimental canine pokegirl has found that not all foods are fur friendly, which can become quite uncomfortable away from cleaning cycles.

Ferals prey mainly on fish, rodents, and at times, rodent pokegirls, though the breed generally prefers easy meals and can become quite a problem after discovering that human trash cans are easy smorgasbords. If threatened, these canine pokegirls almost universally utilize their Turn Stone technique, making the breed one of the least threatening ferals that encroach on human habitation. Interestingly, the breed can be pokeballed in this state, making Feral Tanuki an easy capture in the presence of a wandering Tamer.

The Tanuki is a rather common end form for girls going through Threshold, especially in the Edo League and the region of Noir that encompasses the area that had once been France. Threshold is quick, as the pokegirl turns completely into stone for the span of a few hours, emerging as a pokegirl afterward. Thresholders are often sold for large profits to ranches and abroad.
