Noted alongside other aquatic pokegirls during the Revenge War, the Mareen was used in various ways, though none particularly notable. In modern times, the breed is also used in many aquatic based uses, from fishing to firefighting, though the breed does stand out as a useful pokegirl for excursions into the feral infested wilds. Particularly enjoyed by Watchers and Tradesmen for their memory, many are used as a cheap alternative to secretarial pokegirls like the G-point (or as a furred alternative to those that prefer animorphs)

Standing between 4 and 5.5 feet (1.2 - 1.7 meters) Mareens run the usual range of Near Human appearances. Based on the muskrat, all members of the breed have at least rounded rodent ears and a tail, though a majority have prominent incisors as well. Ears vary somewhat in size depending on the individual, with the majority being smaller than those of the Titmouse breed. Furred members of the breed are typically plantigrade, though digigrade individuals are not unheard of, with partial webbing of the feet regardless of the structure. Their fur colors range from browns and blacks to more aquatic colors, with blue or brown making up a dueling majority. Muzzles are commonly found to some degree on fully-furred individuals, and are typically not present on those without fur. Skin tones range from human norms to aquatic colors as well, with blue being as common as human tones.

The breed's tail is an impressive body feature, as the limb is flattened slightly to aid in propulsion, as well as being tipped with what is commonly called the breed's 'orb'. This inflatable organ is essentially a fur covered expandable sac connected to several oil glands. These glands secrete an oil that is lighter than water, and a fully inflated orb can typically keep up to twice the pokegirls weight afloat before the orb is submerged. Filling the organ from empty to fully full takes a typical Mareen around three minutes, and the process tends to continue until stopped consciously by the pokegirl. Deflating takes about twice as long, leaving the pokegirl with a tuft of fur at the end of her scaled tail.

Playful and friendly are two of the most common descriptions of Mareen personalities, though the breed as a whole run the spectrum of differing natures. Common rumors around the breed places them as rather childish in their pranks, as a popular anecdote of the breed has them blowing bubbles below a water bound victim in the appearance of passing gas underwater. This rodent breed tends to be average when given positions of authority, usually being reported as better at secretarial positions than Alpha or Beta positions within a harem.

Popular opinion labels the breed as middling battlers, though Mareens are capable of firing off water techniques with a natural skill. When trained, the breed can be quite powerful, though still limited by their elemental weaknesses. One large draw of the breed is their ability to sense both humans and pokegirls within twenty feet of themselves, unless there is a non-water-porous barrier, such as a steel wall. During battles, this renders techniques like Phase or Invis useless, as these aquatic rodents can pinpoint where their opponent is.

Thankfully, the breed's enhanced sense of touch is regulated to their hands, feet, and around the mouth (or muzzle), meaning that the breed is able to avoid the stigma of being as easy to please as their pre-evolved form. The enhanced sense of touch does mean that the breed is more inclined to have fetishes relating to their more sensitive areas, though this isn't a universal trait. Preferences should be taken on an individual basis.

Wild Mareens are skittish, most living around some body of water (though individuals have been found migrating between bodies of water). The first instinct of the breed is to flee into water if harassed, though ferals near human habitation occasionally become habituated to the presence of humans and go about their business if unmolested. Habituated ferals occasionally become a problem if they choose to dam a stream or river, or if they find plants grown in gardens or farms particularly tasty. Tamers are advised to utilize electric, ice, or plant pokegirls when trying to capture a feral Mareen, and to block off their routes to waterways.

Threshold directly into a Mareen isn't heard of, usually occurring with family histories of water and rodent types. Of interest to researchers is the ongoing mystery of this 'backwards threshold' as animorphic individuals average less than three days to complete the transformation, while those with just ears and tails can take up to five weeks. Threshold is always painless, though those individuals becoming digigrade are more likely to break bones in their changing limbs if they're not careful. Thresholders are usually sold into the fishing industry.
