The Next Day – 12 Years Later

The morning air was still heavy with the smell of smoke from the pyre where Josephine and Midori had been cremated even though the fire had been carefully put out the day before.
Suddenly Faelan and Svetlana appeared, her arm slipped through his. She sighed and leaned her head against his shoulder as he looked around, his ears rotating carefully as he scanned the area.
“Why are we here?” Svetlana gave him a glance. “I would think that this place had too many bad memories for you.”
“This is where it all began, twelve years ago.” Faelan glanced in the direction of the dead Giantess. She’d been rolled onto her back and her lower torso had been opened, from the looks of it with chainsaws. “I just wanted to see it again.” One ear rotated to aim at the Megami-sama. “I’ve already been through all of the stages of grief.” He glanced around again. “We were so bloody lucky. I guess I’ve seen enough.”
“Are we going back to Indigo?”
“No, the next stop is Wick.”
Svetlana lifted her head to look at him. “What are we going to be doing there?”
“I owe that OfficerJenny a taming, remember?”
She chuckled. “I’d forgotten all about that.” Her arm tightened around his. “Am I going to get to help?”
Faelan pursed his lips as he thought. “You’ve been moderately good recently, so I’ll give the Jenny the option.”
Svetlana poked him gently in the shoulder with her free hand. “You might want to let your Alpha have that option, not some strange pokegirl.” The view flickered as they teleported to a clearing a quarter kilometer from the outskirts of Wick. Trees blocked out the view of, or more importantly from, the town itself. “Or are you thinking about keeping her?”
“Considering that you still remind me about how Midori brought me the twin Eva’s four years ago, are you looking for the opportunity to add your stamp to the harem?”
She shrugged. “Historically, Wick wouldn’t miss her and, with the work we do now, an OfficerJenny would help in many ways, not the least of which would be establishing our credentials that much more quickly when we have to break cover.” She let go of his arm and looked around. “I would like to see if she can recognize you after all this time, even though you haven’t really aged all that much. Your hair is longer and you’ve grown those blue swirlie things on your face.” She grinned at his expression as she flipped his knee length braid. “You’ve never given your facial markings a good name, you know.”
            “They are called yokosuji.”
“Yes, but yours aren’t stripes. They curl from your eyes down over your cheeks and then go past your temples and into your hair.”
“It doesn’t matter. They are always called yokosuji and I’ve never appreciated you trying to needle me about them.”
“Would you rather I went back to complaining about your behavior all of the time?”
“When you give me a choice like that, I suppose your childish comments about my yokosuji are acceptable.”
Svetlana gave him a smirk. “If we are going to keep the OfficerJenny, we’ll have to test her for magical talent.” She tugged gently on his arm and he followed her lead as they started towards Wick.
Faelan glanced at her. “Remind me again when magical ability became a requirement for joining my harem?”
“Officially it never did, but since all of your other pokegirls are magically talented, I don’t see any reason not to want all harem applicants to have some magical abilities, do you?” She shook his arm gently. “In twelve years you have added exactly four pokegirls to your harem and since Midori doesn’t count, that gives you five. Most Tamers would have cycled through dozens of them by now.” She peered at him out of the corner of her eye. “It could be argued that you are supposed to have had more pokegirls in that time period, especially since you have technically only caught two feral pokegirls.”
“Let’s see. I caught Derdekea three years into my schooling at Vale, Tetsuyo after Midori told me she was attacking people at the shrine, and she brought me the twins two years later after they were dumped at the shrine.” Faelan nodded. “You are absolutely right. I’ve only caught two pokegirls and taken two more into my harem.” He grinned. “So?”
Svetlana grinned back. “I would be perfectly happy if you didn’t bring any more girls into the harem. I’m just pointing out that you went to all of the trouble to get a Master Tamer’s license and then a Breeder’s license and you aren’t really using either one of them. Eventually someone is going to start asking questions.”
“I suppose you could be right.” Faelan waited a beat. “For a change.” He made a lazy grab for the tongue she stuck out at him. “What can I do about it, except suddenly start catching every pokegirl that walks by?”
“Let me think about it for a little while.” Svetlana frowned in thought. “The OfficerJenny would be considered out of circulation so taking her wouldn’t help. The Leagues really want Tamers to catch feral pokegirls most of all, as that helps in two ways, by removing a potential breeder and removing the threat that the pokegirl herself represents. Taking domesticates and taking pokegirls from other Tamers is considered a means to an end since it makes a Tamer more likely to be able to catch feral pokegirls, but isn’t what they really want in a Master Tamer or Breeder.” She sighed and let his arm go. “We should probably proceed practically. Can you pull up your legitimate Tamer record for me, please?”
Faelan activated his pokedex, entered a code, and handed it to the Megami-sama.

Svetlana nodded. “Ok, even though Azumi and Kajimi act like they are two halves of the same soul and rest in the same pokeball, most Tamers would consider them to be two separate psychic pokegirls, Derdekea is a flying magic dark type, I’m considered a magic and psychic type and Tetsuyo is a steel type.” She looked up at him. “You’ve got psychic, dark, flying, steel and magic representatives, so you have a lot of room as far as types go for adding pokegirls. Considering your work, a fire type could be useful as could an electric type or some kind of fighting type.”
I’m picking up a sudden increase in radio traffic on police frequencies. There is a hostage situation at the bank. The assistant manager has been killed. The police think it is Team Viper, but then they always start out with that assumption.
Svetlana’s eyes widened as her twee relayed the information to her. “How is it you always manage to go someplace just before the wheels come off?”
Faelan grinned as she grabbed him and summoned her wings. “Just lucky?”
Svetlana launched herself into the air. “Sure you are. Are you sure you don’t have the Interesting Times bloodcurse?”
“I’m not from here, remember. I don’t have any bloodcurses. I think it’s your fault.”

***

Svetlana landed a block from the bank, a massive two story building. Everything looked almost normal in these situations, at least from his experience with them. There was the usual comedy of errors involving the local police surrounding the bank from way too close and the bleating civilians and civil authority personnel, who of course wanted the whole thing to have never happened in the first place.
The only thing out of place was the body. Bank robbers usually didn’t start killing their hostages this soon. It marked them as one of three things. They were either very inexperienced, very practical, or not bank robbers at all. None of the three possibilities made Faelan feel comfortable.
Faelan pulled a pokeball off of his belt and activated it. The red beam coalesced into two purple forms. “Azumi, Kajimi, find out who is in charge here.” He dropped his voice and muttered to himself, “Have Alice check the status of the video feeds in the bank.”
The two identical Espea cocked their heads and Kajimi turned and pointed at a police jeep that was pulling to a stop. “She is, Honored Lord,” the two Espea chorused together.
Alice says that the sheriff here is Elizabeth Samms. You have met her brother, George; he is the aide to Counselor Watson. The video feeds are still operational, although some of the cameras have been damaged or destroyed.
“Go through the video feeds and tell me if you find anything useful.” Faelan stepped forward as he reached into his pocket. “Sheriff Samms?” A fit, well dressed woman in her mid fifties looked up as she got out of the driver’s seat. “I am Faelan Wolf.” He proffered a badge. “BLSF Special Operations Group.”
“Why aren’t you in uniform?” The woman looked him up and down.
Faelan smiled. “SOG personnel don’t wear uniforms.”
Sheriff Samms dropped her voice. “I’ve heard of you, Wolf. Why is a troubleshooter for the Planetary League Council here and why are you masquerading as a member of the BLSF?”
Faelan’s smile grew. “The PLC prefers for us to keep a low profile. Their policy is to let the local governments get the credit for our activities.” The smile vanished. “I’m in Wick on personal business and came down here when I heard something was going on. I’m not here to step on your toes, but if I were you I’d ask for my help. Your people aren’t trained for this.”
Samms gave him a sour look. “I know. What would you have me do?”
“Give me a free hand and pull your troops back a block or so. I’d open up the front of the bank and take the robbers down fast and dirty.” He shook his head. “It looks like you’ve got some amateurs here and things tend to get bloody when people who don’t know the rules try to play the game.”
“What makes you say they aren’t professionals?”
“Pros would have hit the bank in the night or just before it opened or closed. They also usually don’t start a robbery off with a killing, since that tends to make the OfficerJennys determined to bring them in and we know that they will chase a killer to the ends of the earth if need be. Professional robbers know this as well, whether they are freelance or work for Team Viper.” He smiled slightly. “They also haven’t disabled the video feeds to the bank. Professionals would have hit that first. These robbers are still babies.”
Samms blinked. “We haven’t had time to check the video feeds so how do you know whether they are working or not?”
“I am an agent of the PLC Department of Special Affairs and it is my job to know things, remember?”
The Sheriff gave him an appraising look. “I’ll get my people tapping the video feeds. Do you really think you can resolve this without further loss of life?”
“I’ll try to keep any more hostages from getting killed. As for the bad guys, that decision is going to be up to them. I will give them the chance to surrender, but if they don’t take it then I’m going to take them down hard. At that point I’ll do whatever needs to be done.”
Samms nodded. “Do it. I’ll have my people pull back the cordon and get all available ambulances down here.”
“Good.” Faelan turned to Svetlana as he pulled two more pokeballs from his belt. “Take one of the twins around back and set up an observation post, then get back here.”
“Very well.” Svetlana grabbed one of the two Espea and took off, circling around the bank towards the rear of the building. The remaining Espea giggled suddenly.
            “Yes, Azumi?”
The Espea giggled again. “Svetlana thinks she has Azumi and keeps talking to Kajimi by my name, Honored Lord.” Faelan sighed. The two Espea were completely identical, down to scent and genetic code, so it shouldn’t be surprising that no one except Faelan could tell them apart. The strange thing was the fact that Faelan could. He never got the two of them confused, not even in the dark, and he couldn’t explain how he did it.
He activated one of the pokeballs and Derdekea appeared, her long deep purple hair swirling slightly around her skintight black knit dress as the light wind whipped it. She looked into his blue eyes with her black ones. “You summoned me, Honored Lord?”
“We’ve got some bank robbers with hostages. I want you to take overwatch. Don’t start killing people unless you receive my explicit orders, do you understand?”
She inclined her head slightly as midnight black wings shimmered into existence around her and unfurled. “As you command, my lord.” The Fallen Angel launched herself into the air with a blast of wind and quickly moved to take up station over the bank as she flew in a wide circle overhead. She glowed briefly and balls of light spread out to cover the perimeter as her guarding spell went into effect.
Faelan activated his last pokeball and Tetsuyo appeared, her black skin gleaming in the sun. The GunValkyrie immediately bowed deeply. “How may this unworthy one serve you, Honored Lord?”
“We’ve got some property to destroy and some hostages to rescue, Tetsuyo.” He smiled. “I thought you might want to help.”
Tetsuyo smiled slightly as her red eyes flashed. “I would be pleased to assist you, Honored Lord.” With a whine, her tribarrels unfolded along her forearms as the came out of storage.
Svetlana appeared as she teleported in. “Azumi is all set up and I see you’ve stationed Derdekea as the overwatch. What do you want me to do?” Azumi snickered quietly.
“You’ll start by using bestow luck on Tetsuyo and then you’ll stay close to me as a reserve. When the wall comes down you can help by clearing out the dust and knocking people out.”
The Megami-sama nodded. “Sounds good. When are we getting started?”
“I need to contact the robbers first and give them the chance to surrender.” He opened his com. “Connect me to the com at the bank.”
Alice whispered to him through the phone. “There are seven different com numbers for the bank. I’m connecting to all of them.”
His com clicked as someone in the bank activated one of the units in the bank. “Who is this?”
“My name is Faelan Wolf and if you surrender right now, no one will get hurt. But if you don’t, then I’m going to have to take steps to remove you.”
“We want a transport and all the cops off the street. If we don’t get what we want in half an hour we’re going to kill one of the hostages!” The com disconnected.
Faelan hung up his com and turned to the Espea. “Azumi, show Tetsuyo where to shoot.”
Azumi nodded. “Yes, Honored Lord.” She walked behind Tetsuyo and placed her hand on the back of the GunValkyrie’s head. The Espea’s eyes glowed blue and Tetsuyo raised her arms and started firing, her tribarrels spinning in a blur.
Faelan had noticed several interesting things about Tetsuyo in the six years that he’d had her. One of these was that what seemed to put most people off about armed pokegirls was the noise. Normal pokegirl attacks often made little if any noise. Not Tetsuyo’s.
Even though he knew she was firing balls of plasma from her power core and not real bullets, the noise level was comparable to similarly sized cannons that he’d heard fired at home. Another interesting thing was that as her level increased, so did the size of the plasma ball that she fired as well as the noise. When she’d attacked his shrine in Edo and he’d had to catch her, the GunValkyrie’s plasma bolts were roughly the size of an eleven millimeter round and when she fired her tribarrels it snarled like a machine pistol. Now each plasma bolt was three centimeters in diameter and the sound thundered like an angry god.
The plasma bolts had no penetrating power, but each impact released a tremendous amount of energy which shattered the facing of the bank as it hit. The front of the bank quickly disintegrated under the short bursts that Tetsuyo was firing and tumbled to the ground in a waterfall of rubble and a cloud of dust.
The dust suddenly swirled and vanished as Svetlana sent a stream of wind through into the bank, her powerful wings revealing the bank robbers and hostages, all of whom had identical looks of shock on their faces.
The visible faces went blank and people collapsed as Svetlana hit everyone with hypnotize.
Azumi stuck up one closed fist, signaling that everyone she could detect was unconscious. Tetsuyo rotated the tribarrel on her right arm into storage and unfolded her sniper rifle as she scanned the wreckage for threats.
Faelan turned to the astonished Sheriff. “You need to get your people in there and take everyone into custody until you can sort things out.” She hurriedly activated her com and gave the necessary orders.
Samms turned to Faelan as OfficerJennys and Growlies rushed the bank. “That was incredible.”
He smiled. “Incredible good or incredible oh my god you just destroyed a building?”
A smile flickered around the edges of her mouth. “I’m not sure yet.”
Faelan’s smile broadened into a grin. “At least you are honest.” They shared a chuckle.
