The police car’s door slammed with a bang and Deputy Keyes gave Kerrik a hard look. “Wolf, you’ve got a lot of balls calling me after refusing to help. What happened, did they get your goats last night?” He snorted. “It would serve you right if they ate every last one of them.”
Kerrik gave him a bland look in return and jerked his head in the direction of his pickup. “Back of the truck.”
Keyes snorted. “Since I’m here, I might as well take a report on your loss, even though the sheriff is going to be less than sympathetic to you.” He stomped over to the pickup and looked in the bed. A tarp had been put in the bed and the body of the merrowl had been carelessly tossed onto it where it had bled for a while before freezing. Raven and Misery had stabbed it several times with energy blades and it looked quite the mess. The deputy looked up at Kerrik, his eyes wide. “I thought you couldn’t help.”
“I can’t. There are some things you’re not cleared to know and if anyone comes and asks me what they’re not cleared to know, I won’t have any idea what they’re talking about. However, the attacks on Henderson’s cattle should stop.”
“Henderson put a bounty on the killers.”
Kerrik shrugged. “I didn’t kill her and you’d better understand that. In any case, I don’t care about any bounty. Give it to charity.”
Deputy Keyes nodded sagely. “I understand completely. I’ll have to take some pictures of the body. Where did you say you found it?”
The kami smiled, careful not to show any teeth. “Why don’t you decide that? Just let me know where she was in case I have to file a report of my own.”
Keyes nodded. “I’ll get the pictures and then, if you’ll help, we can wrap her in that tarp and I’ll put her in my back seat.”
“She’ll probably thaw back there. I don’t have to clean your car if she leaks, right?”
Keyes blinked. “You got a second tarp?”
Whisper touched his mind. There is one in the barn, but it will leave us with no tarps to cover the hole in the roof.
“I think so. I’ll go look.” Kerrik was back with the second tarp before the deputy was finished taking pictures.
While they were wrapping up the body, Keyes gave him an examining look. “This is an awfully big spread to work by your own self.”
            Kerrik shrugged. “I’ll make do.”
The deputy continued as if he hadn’t spoken. “Next Sunday, why don’t you come over for dinner? You might like to meet my sister.”
“You don’t know anything about me and yet you’d offer to introduce us?”
“I’ve got a good feeling about you.” Keyes grinned when Kerrik looked at him in disbelief.
            “Ignore it.”
Keyes laughed. “You’ll get a hearty meal out of it and my sister is a good woman. Pretty, too.”
Compared to us, I seriously doubt that.
Kerrik managed not to laugh. “Deputy, I won’t be around that long. I don’t expect the work here will last for more than a couple of months and once my work here is done, I’ll be moving on. It’s very likely that I may not be back for some time to come.”
“What work? Oh, wait, I can’t ask that, can I?”
“Very good, deputy. Right now my life has no place in it for anyone like your sister. I’m sure you’d agree she deserves better than that.”
Keyes grunted as he tightened a strap. “That’s fair enough.” The merrowl was frozen in an odd position, but once she was wrapped up they finally got her into the back seat of the patrol car. “Thanks, Wolf.”
Raven and Misery joined him as the deputy sped out of sight. “You think that’ll be the last of him?”
Misery took his hand. “I certainly hope so. So now he’ll think you’re part of some super secret government project?”
“I didn’t really have much choice. They needed to know that the pokegirl threat had been dealt with or we’d have to stay on the lookout for helicopters for a long time. Hopefully things will quiet down now that the attacks on the cattle will end. It doesn’t hurt that they’ve got a body to show off.”
It’s amusing that they’ll think that a single merrowl was capable of causing that much damage to cattle in such a short amount of time. Whisper looked at Raven. Who is supposed to gather the eggs today? I did it yesterday.
Misery held up her hands. “Not me, I keep scaring them. Maybe it has to with a genetic fear of Easter bunnies.”
“Maybe it has to do with you growling at them when they peck your hand. Don’t worry, I’ll get the eggs.” Kerrik chuckled. “You three feed the livestock.”

(12/09/-10 1200 Horse Creek, Wyoming)
“What’s the final count, Raven?” Kerrik leaned forward in his chair as the archmage reached for her pokedex.
“We had to kill the one merrowl. We captured the rest, which turned out to be three merrowls, one purrsian, two firecats, two lionesses and two coytotits.” She touched the display. “One of the lionesses is pretty powerful and so is one of the coytotits. Neither is at your harem’s current level of ability, but you might be getting bored with us.”
“I think I’ve already made enough personal sacrifices for Project Cowslip. We’ll save them all for Naruhito. Ten pokegirls isn’t a bad start.”
“No, it’s not. Should we be looking for more?”
“I don’t think we should.” Misery sat down on the floor next to Kerrik and leaned against his leg. “We have more important things to do.”
            “Like what?”
“While I’d like to say something about Christmas shopping and presents for me, I think we need to spend the rest of our time training to work together.” She glanced up at her tamer. “We also need to plan what you’re going to do when we return to the Texas League.”
“I can’t really plan that until we return. We’re affecting things here that may cause changes all over the planet and I won’t know what those changes are until we’re back in 6 AS. There might not even be a Texas League to try and approach.”
“Didn’t Raven recently say something about there not being a try?”
Raven ignored Misery’s joke to give Kerrik a look of interest. “What have we changed?”
Without our presence, the purrsian and her merrowls would have been free to do whatever they did before. That might include killing someone who will now survive the Red Plague and change the future. That will be the same for the pokegirls who attack the hospital, if we allow them to. Not to mention Jamie and Naruhito will survive, along with anyone else who died that night.
“You said if we allow them to attack?” Misery rubbed her head. “Ok, Whisper, now I’m confused.”
We know that they will approach the hospital in an ambulance on the night of February ninth. We could intercept the ambulance before it gets to the hospital and neutralize the pokegirls inside it before they ever get there. Only the ambulance driver will die in that scenario, not counting any pokegirls that we do not capture.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.” Raven toyed with an empty mug. “If we’re going to transport Naruhito back to Edo, he’ll have to meet us. If he meets us when we’re saving his life, he’s much more likely to be friendly. If we just approach him in the street, his response is likely to involve gunfire from his bodyguards.” She looked at Kerrik. “And if he sees us defending him while obeying you, you’ll be in a much better position to sell the idea that pokegirls can be tamed at all. Otherwise, he’ll probably think you’re not right in the head when you start talking about fucking pokegirls.”
Kerrik flicked an ear. “Those are excellent points. I’d been considering intercepting the attackers short of the hospital, and later pulling the ‘me kami’ card on him, but you may be right.”
Raven flashed her fangs in a grin. “Of course I am. In the meantime, Misery is right that we need to train. Do you want me to try to get some extra pokegirls from a base?”
“I haven’t decided yet. The big question is how many pokegirls will Naruhito need? I’m not interested in giving him an army and with ten men with a pokegirl apiece, he’s got the nucleus of a decent tamer detachment.”
I think he needs at least one psychic pokegirl. They can be very useful.
Misery snorted. “I’m somehow not surprised that you would advocate a psychic pokegirl for someone.”
We will be rescuing Naruhito from an assassination attempt by forces loyal to Sukebe. As Sukebe’s forces have a global presence, merely returning him to Japan will not guarantee that those attacks will stop. We must also keep in mind that we will be returning him to Japan and not the Edo League. Whatever name it might bear now, the Edo League will very probably be commanded out of Beijing. This means that any Japanese tamers that Naruhito creates will eventually be facing off with tamers from China as this new league attempts to bring Japan under its control. This new league may well also send assassins to kill Naruhito in an attempt to sow confusion while their consolidation process is underway. A decent psychic pokegirl or two could help to keep him alive long enough to organize Japan to effectively resist assimilation.
Raven’s voice was heavy with sarcasm. “Should we just grab the next three psychics we find or can you give me a name of someone you’d like for the job?”
Whisper glared back at her. Your attempt at humor is not appreciated.
“I have a suggestion.” Misery’s ears flicked and she smiled as Kerrik stroked them. “What about Whisper’s half sister, Moirai?”
Whisper gave a low growl as her antennae curled defensively. That is less funny than Raven’s lame joke.
Misery glared back. “I’m serious. It’s December of 1992. Moirai is still alive. She won’t die for three more years.”
Whisper’s mouth dropped open and Kerrik felt a pulse of mingled joy and sadness from her. She’s right.
Kerrik’s ears pricked up. “Who is Moirai?”
Raven answered before anyone else could. “She’s like us, but not. Sukebe designed her as test unit, but she wasn’t a killer like we are.”
Misery snorted. “She’s still a killer.”
“Yes, but not like us. She’s just violent when the situation demands it. If time passes like it did, she’ll be killed somewhere in India in mid 1996, while she was trying to save some humans from a band of roving mantis.”
Kerrik frowned. “Why was she saving humans?”
“She was looking for her purpose and decided that it was to protect humans.”
            “She sounds like a celestial.”
Misery patted him on the knee. “That’s only because she is.”

(12/09/-10 1600 Wyoming, 012/10/-10 0230 Somewhere in West Bengal, India)
Whisper appeared and let Kerrik go. He looked around as his ears flicked nervously, sampling the air with every sense available. The jungle was all around them and he could hear the calls of birds and the wind. In the distance, something larger sounded a challenge. Raven and Misery appeared next to them and the mini-top’s nose worked the air. “I thought it would be more humid than this.”
It’s winter and much drier than in the other seasons. She pointed towards a ruin barely visible in the starlight. That is our destination. I have contacted Moirai and, while she is surprised that I am here with Misery and Four Twelve, she welcomes us. I have informed her that your name is now Raven and she is very curious as to what has happened.
“I’ll bet.” Raven muttered. “Nosy little,” she broke off when Kerrik gave her a look. “Sorry.”
Kerrik paused, his ears going flat. “This isn’t some trick to get me to add to my harem, is it?”
Raven looked shocked. “I know better than to try and trick you like that. Besides, Moirai wouldn’t be on my list of acceptable pokegirls if she were the last one alive.”
“I take it you two don’t get along.”
Raven and she have never met. Neither has ever been interested in such a meeting.
Kerrik sighed. “No sniping, no hitting and no killing.”
            “Should I just remain silent?”
Perhaps that would be the best course. That earned Whisper a glare from her maharani.
            “Just be polite, please?”
“Since you ask it of me, Kerrik, I will.”
“Me, too.” Misery chimed in. “I’ll be polite.”
“I appreciate it, ladies. Let’s go meet Whisper’s sister.”
The ruin was an ancient temple, overgrown with vines and bushes which had sprouted anywhere a seed could find root. The front of the temple had crumbled beneath the weight of time and they carefully picked their way through the rubble while keeping a wary eye on the structure above them. Raven summoned her amethyst globe of light to show the way. “It’s not exactly Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
Misery snorted. “I’m glad for that. I’d cheerfully prefer to avoid the everlasting series of stupid death traps, thank you very much.”
As they proceeded deeper into the ruin, a flickering light appeared in the distance. The light resolved into a guttering torch that had been stuck into a crack in the wall. The flickering light revealed a rolled up sleeping mat and backpack.
A figure sat on a large rock near the sleeping mat. The first things to be noticed were the tremendous black wings that arced up and around her. Only once those were resolved could the rest of the figure be assessed. She was watching them with inky black eyes the same color as the hair that fell around her shoulders. She looked almost human, except for the wings and the black antenna that curled up from her forehead. She was wearing a pollen yellow sari that her lush figure filled out very nicely and sandals graced her feet.
She rose gracefully to stand as Whisper stepped forward and the two embraced. “Whisper, I didn’t expect to see you.” Her eyes flicked over the others in the group. “Especially not with Raven and Misery.” She cocked her head. “And a human just makes for a greater mystery. Please explain.”
This is Kerrik Wolf. He is our tamer.
“You have gone to the humans?” Confusion appeared on her face. “It is too early for you to do that.” Her wings faded into nothingness as she stepped around her sister and in front of Kerrik. Her eyes met his and she blinked as the universe seemed to flicker and realign with a wrench. “You are from the future.” Her antennae rose. “I have seen you in a possible path for me. I am not to serve humanity, then.”
Kerrik’s ears flicked as he looked around warily. “I hate it when that happens,” he muttered. “I’m never quite sure what just happened or if it’s good or bad.” Then his voice strengthened. “If not humanity, who are you to serve?”
“You have come for me, which means that path is closed. I am now to serve the rising sun.”
Kerrik looked stunned. “You can read the probabilities.” His ears flicked and half flattened. “How far ahead can you read?”
“Only the immediate choices can I see. If I could see more, I would have known you were coming with my sister. I am pleased that you are here, however. The paths available before your coming all showed my death in a few years. I do not wish to die.” She began to glow and when it died down, her sari was gone. It had been replaced by a man’s kimono. “I will serve the symbol of the rising sun and his progeny. I will protect and, if they will allow, guide them that they might prosper.”
Kerrik still looked a bit shell-shocked. “Ok.” He looked around. “Does this place hold any particular significance for you?”
“It kept the weather off of me and it hides me from the humans, who do not understand that I mean them no harm unless they seek to harm me. Otherwise it means nothing to me.”
Raven raised her hand and the light rose to hover several meters overhead. “I think we’ve found our training ground. You can stay with us while we train and until we have to save Naruhito.”
“I will. I will need tamed, but I will not lie with him.” She nodded towards Kerrik.
He shrugged. “That’s perfectly fine with me. Any of my harem that is willing to help you is more then welcome to do so.”
“You do not mind?” She looked surprised. “You hunger for me.”
Raven gave him a sharp look that he ignored. His ears flicked. “I hunger for every female I go near. It’s part of what I am, but I do not act on it. I do not want you bonded to me, so I won’t even try. You are safe from me.”
“I know you cannot lie. Let me get my things and we can leave this place.”
Kerrik reached out and stroked Whisper’s antennae and she smiled as she shivered. “I think she’ll serve Naruhito to the best of her ability, which may be quite impressive. I only hope that Naruhito will be as appreciative of her.”
Will this path not let them be happy together?
“Just because a path is set does not mean that the people involved will be happy about it. Still, I hope they will be.”

(02/12/-09 1400 Horse Creek, Wyoming)
“Now starts the hardest part.” Kerrik settled down on a floor pillow next to Raven. “The waiting.”
The archmage snuggled against him. “Is it really the hardest? I’d think all the training we’ve been doing for the last two months would be harder.”
“We’ll see if you can say that in a couple of hours.”
            What do we do afterwards?
“We go back to waiting. In the timeline created by Shikarou’s trip, Naruhito wasn’t released for four more days, and that was because Shikarou healed him. If he wasn’t the crown prince of Japan, they’d probably have give up on him due to his permanent lung damage. It’s remarkable he didn’t die. Raven will heal him and Jamie up and they’ll have to do some testing to assure them that their remarkable recoveries are real.”
“Raven will need to teach me her healing magic.” Moirai watched them calmly.
The archmage’s eyes narrowed and then she smoothed her face. “I will, but not today. We’ll meet at your place tomorrow and see if you can master it.”
Misery plopped down on Kerrik’s other side. “I’m bored.”
Raven snorted. “You could always shovel out the barn. It’s full of goat and rabbit manure.”
The mini-top shook her head. “I’m never that bored. What’s the plan?”
We’re going to go to Naruhito’s room and stop anyone from killing him. By doing this, we’ll also protect Jamie. The assault team the humans sent got to the hospital before the pokegirls could leave and in the ensuing firefight, the upper floors of the hospital were destroyed by fire. Our actions will prevent that from happening.
Misery frowned. “What happens if humans get in the way while we’re fighting? I’m talking about the so-called innocent bystander like a nurse or patient wandering into the fight. If someone with a gun jumps in, they deserve what they’re going to get.”
Moirai’s lips thinned. “Protecting the prince is paramount.”
The mini-top eyed her briefly before bumping her head against Kerrik’s side. “Now that someone who can’t give me orders has spoken, what’s your decision?”
“I don’t want Jamie to die either, but otherwise she’s right. Don’t go deliberately targeting them, but don’t hold your attack if they get in the middle.” Kerrik’s ears stilled. “Moirai, I can’t give you orders, but I was thinking that it might be best if you hung back and ran the last ditch defense of the prince in case someone gets past us.”
What he is trying to politely say, sister, is that all of the attempts to integrate our teamwork with you was a disaster. Because of this, it might be better if you didn’t fight with us.
A tiny smile appeared on Moirai’s face. “I think I prefer the way he said it.” Everyone laughed. Even Whisper’s mouth opened as she projected a feeling of amusement at them.
Kerrik was still chuckling when he continued. “While I’m still a better shot than anyone else here, it would be best if Naruhito and his men saw me giving orders instead of fighting. That and the fact that I’m the most fragile person in this room means I won’t be involved in the combat unless the wheels come off a lot worse than I expect them too. Whisper and Raven will intercept the attackers while Misery protects their back and exploits any openings they make. In the version that happened on pokegirl prime, we know that the attackers were two umbrea, two slutton and a blazicunt.” He looked around the room. “That’s what attacked there. While it’s very likely that the same force will deploy here, we cannot count on that or else we’ll find ourselves facing ten neo iczel or something like that.”
Neo are easy to defeat. Just announce that one of them said the others were pathetic and they’ll start fighting each other.
Kerrik gave Whisper a hard look. “Your humor is appreciated, but just remember that we cannot say for certain what the composition of the attacking force will be until we either observe or engage them in combat. Considering that we’ll be fighting inside a building, it’s likely that both events will happen simultaneously.” He rubbed an ear tuft. “That means Raven and Whisper will move into the hallway as soon as we make contact. Misery can stay in the room, but she may also elect to be more mobile than that. If you do,” he looked at Misery, “Raven and Whisper and I need to know that you’re going to be roaming or else you may get shot, sliced or otherwise blown up.”
“Trust me when I say that I lost enough limbs at our last big fight. I’d like to keep the ones I have now. You’ll be well warned before I go mobile.”
Kerrik looked up as a chime sounded. “Ladies, for our pre-battle meal we’re having pizza and the timer just announced it’s ready. Whisper, you’ll find a pullet in the sack next to the oven. Eat well and don’t forget to go to the bathroom before we leave. Raven, I’ll feed you before I eat.” He looked around. “That dinner summons includes you, Moirai, if you’re hungry. Move, ladies.”

(02/12/-09 1830 Cheyenne, Wyoming)
Whisper touched his mind as the elevator door closed on the lobby. There is a terrified mind approaching in an ambulance. It is a human who is being forced to operate the vehicle for pokegirls and they are coming here. It begins.
“Fuck. I’m not in position yet. How far away is it?” Kerrik stared at the elevator control panel and willed the metal box to move faster. He growled audibly when it ignored him. “I lecture them on not counting on events to follow the pattern they did for Shikarou and I decide that an hour early is soon enough. I should have thought to check the fucking historical records of this world to see when the kill team showed up.”
They are a good ten minutes out, Kerrik.
“It doesn’t matter. We should have been in position before dawn.” He growled again but squelched it when the bell dinged and the doors rumbled open. He felt the minutes running through his fingers like sand and fought the urge to trot down the hallway. It would put Naruhito’s guards on alert.
He slowed at the nurse’s station and his eyes widened at a familiar face. “Nurse Defenbaugh, aren’t you away from your post?”
“Mr. Wolf.” Kerrik had been coming back to the fourteenth floor to visit Jamie about twice a week, so she knew him well. “I switched with the normal night nurse. I need the overtime and she needs some time off.” She gave him a curious look as he unzipped his parka. “Why are you here in the ICU?”
            “What is your first name?”
            “Tamara. Why?”
He took a deep breath and centered himself. “There are some pokegirls coming to kill Prince Naruhito. They’re probably going to kill everyone on this floor just to make sure they get him, but they’re going to start with him, so everyone else is as safe as they can be as long as he’s alive. Call the authorities and warn them. Tell them they’re going to need a tactical team to fight pokegirls and they’re going to need them here ASAP. Then, Tamara, I want you to get to Naruhito’s room. It’s going to be the safest place on this floor.”
She gave him a shocked look. “How do you know this?”
“Because I’m here to stop them.” He met her gaze. “I’d really like it if you went up to fourteen instead of staying here.”
She got a determined look in her eyes. “Someone is likely to get hurt and I will be needed here.”
“Yeah, I figured you’d say something like that. Get to Naruhito’s room and stay out of the way.” He strode down the hall towards the two armed guards, only stopping when he was three meters away from them. He spoke in Japanese. <Pokegirls are coming to kill your prince. I am here to stop them.> He removed his hat and pulled the pins from his hair. It cascaded down his back as he raised his ears and flicked them idly. <I am kami. Now enter the room and attend to your prince.>
The guards stared and one made a movement towards his chest with one hand. <If you draw that pistol without being commanded to, I will tear your arm off and you will then be unable to protect Naruhito.> He froze the guard with a glare. <Obey me! There is little time for you to be stupid.>
The second guard grabbed the first one’s arm. “Don’t be an idiot. He’s on our side.”
            “How do we know?”
Kerrik switched back to English. “If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t bother trying to convince you that I’m here to help.” He flicked open the parka to show the 15mm pistol in its shoulder holster.
            “Kami carry guns?”
“I do what’s necessary. Now please get inside or stay out here and the pokegirls can kill you first.”
The guards headed inside and one took up station near the bed while the other headed straight for it and touched the still form. “Sir, please wake up.”
The figure stirred. “What is it, Toshi?”
“Sir, there is someone here who claims to be a kami and that he’s here to protect you.”
Naruhito laughed briefly before it turned into a hacking cough that trailed off into silence. “A kami? Here in America? Before pokegirls I would have said that impossible, but these days impossible is now normal.” He raised his head slightly. “Approach me, kami.”
Kerrik moved to the foot of the bed and gave a slight bow. “Prince Naruhito. Pokegirls are coming to finish what they started when they destroyed your plane. I am here to stop them. I will be using pokegirls of my own, for I have the secret to turning them to our use. I will teach this to you before you return to Japan.” He eyed the guards. “I’m telling you this before I call my pokegirls so that your guards don’t react badly and get killed by my pokegirls.”
Naruhito stared at him for a long moment. “Pokegirl to fight pokegirl. A wise move indeed, if you can teach us how to do it.”
“I can and I will, after this threat is dealt with. Please inform your guards that I will be calling four pokegirls to aid us tonight.”
“Toshi, you heard him. Do as he says.”
“Yes, your highness.” Toshi turned to Kerrik. “If you do not bring these pokegirls, he will die?”
“He will. One of them can heal his lungs.”
Toshi nodded. “We will obey you. What would you have us do?”
“Stand with your prince. A pokegirl will stand with you as the final defense should the other three pokegirls and I fall.”
Kerrik turned to the door as Nurse Defenbaugh hurried in with a medical kit. “Please go to the other side of the room.” He slipped off his parka. “Whisper, we’re as ready as we’re going to get.”
The cabbit appeared next to him and let Moirai free as Raven and Misery teleported in. “Raven, the prince is in the bed. Heal him.”
Moirai followed her to the bed and bowed deeply to the prince. “My prince, I am Moirai and I am to be yours.”
I wonder how they’ll work that out.
“Not my problem,” Kerrik muttered. “He’ll probably have to have a pokegirl in order to convince others that they can be tamed and she’s not a bad choice.” He glanced over at Whisper as she gave him a curious look. “For him.” She nodded and flashed him a smile.
Raven placed a softly glowing hand on Naruhito’s forehead and his breathing eased as her healing magic coursed through his body. “You’ll still be weak, so don’t try to get up just yet.” He nodded but didn’t speak as Moirai bent down to examine him. Raven bobbed her head in Moirai’s direction. “When you feel a little better, she can start removing tubes and stuff from your body, if you’d like.” His eyes grew a bit wild at that and she chuckled. “Or the nurse can if you’d prefer.”
Nurse Defenbaugh was staring at the prince. “You healed him. Can you do that for the others in the ICU?”
“I’ll have to ask my tamer and, whether or not he allows me to, it would have to wait until after we take care of the attackers.” Amethyst eyes met the nurse’s. “In any event, the hospital administrators may not want a pokegirl near their charges.”
Nurse Defenbaugh’s response was lost when Whisper’s antennae flicked and her head came up. The ambulance just pulled into the emergency room entrance. They are here.
