Prologue
Human figures slowly advanced through the trees, the shadows lengthening as dusk approached. The one in the lead slowed to a stop, raising his arm to signal the others to do the same. The other four soldiers crouched down in the gloom clutching their rifles close, their camouflage patterned clothes making them difficult to pick out from the underbrush surrounding them. Once sure that his squad had stopped, the leader brought a walkies-talkie up to his mouth and quietly spoke.
“All stations, this is Alpha, approaching point zero zero. Report position and status, over”
“Bravo, approaching point zero one. No problems, over”
“Charlie, approaching point one three. Behind schedule, over”
“Alpha, pick up the pace Charlie. We don't have much time left, over”
“Charlie, understood. Will try to...”
The rest of the response was overwhelmed by deafeningly loud concussive burst. Moments afterwards the leader of Alpha heard the explosive burst of sound himself as it was carried over the air from the direction of squad Charlie.
The leader tried to raise Charlie over the radio, but only heard static. Making a decision he radioed base camp and reported an accident to stop the war game scenario and rushed toward Charlie squads last position with the rest of his group. They found Charlie squad gathered around a strange, perfectly circular bowl shaped hole in the forest floor. The leader of Alpha spent a few minutes staring, noting that the underbrush and tree branches also cut off suddenly over that spot. Almost as if something had taken a spherical bite out of the forest... furrowing his eyebrows in confusion, he looked at the silent Charlie squad for an explanation. His mouth suddenly went dry as he noticed only four members of the five man group.
“Where's Private Leblanc?” the Charlie squad leader's only response was to point off to the side of the unnatural depression. He walked around the hole and bent over to pick up a discarded Kevlar helmet, a neat rounded chunk missing from it's side.
“Well... shit.” Command was not going to like this, at all.
*SCENE BREAK*
Somewhere else, beyond dimensional divides, a girl was annoyed. Being annoyed was somewhat unusual for her as she considered herself to be a rather fun loving girl. To be more precise about the source of her irritation, well that would be an experiment of sorts. A device she had recovered from one of her creators labs, she had been testing it both magically and mechanically when the device had seemed to... absorb all of the surrounding energy. Sensing the immanent explosion from the surrounding technology and disrupted spells, she'd grabbed the device and teleported. She'd arrived somewhere else but the device had, for lack of a better word, dragged and somehow fallen along the way. How that was possible during a moment instantaneous movement she had no idea, but it only made her want the device more. She'd known approximately where it had fallen, which is what had led her to being in this dusk lit forest not too far from a small human town. She fluffed her long red and orange hair back as her fur, of a similar hue somewhat reminiscent of an open flame, bristled in irritation. Additionally there was something off about this forest, it's near complete silence was almost eerie.
A short lived spark of light off to the side caught her attention. Spotting her prize, she adjusted her leather halter top and approached with a satisfied grin on her feline face. The object of her search was a plain looking metal cylinder, about twenty centimetres long with an obvious handle on one end. The other had a trio of spikes that jutted out sideways from the cylinder, gently away from the rest of the device as if it had held something. An occasional arc of electricity jumped between the spines as the tube held itself was suspended horizontally a meter off the ground.
The feline woman looked at the device curiously, the air at the sharp end of the device possessing a thick charged quality. Standing behind it she found that it was fixed in place, her casual efforts not budging it in the slightest. Getting a better grip on the handle she began pulling it back with all of her genetically enhanced might. Slowly the device began to pull back, the electric discharges at the other end becoming larger and more erratic as she did so. Then, suddenly, several things happened at once.
The device grew hot and with a slight crackling sound it sprang free of its suspended place. The cat woman's wild hair was blown back by a sudden outpouring of air. A man in a mottled green uniform appeared in the space before her, and there was the soft thump of the man's skull connecting with the rocky ground.
The woman blinked at the man lying on the ground, then turned to the cylinder still in her hand. Still hot, she opened the panel on the side to confirm what her nose already told her. Sure enough the electronic innards of the device had charred beyond recognition. With a huff she lazily tossed the cylinder into the undergrowth, no longer interested. She then turned back to the man.
“Sorry about that,” she said, flashing a playful grin as the man let out a low moan of pain “guess you're stuck here now, huh.” she nodded sympathetically. While he seemed to be quite interesting , she had other things to do. However she didn't want to leave the poor guy with nothing, she wasn't cruel after all. Thinking for a moment, her thoughtful expression flashed into an even wider grin. She'd been meaning to find an excuse to test this spell, now she could and give the man a gift. Two birds with one attack! With a slight frown of concentration, energy began to collect around her right hand. It rapidly grew in strength as a fine sheen of sweat broke out over the cat woman's skin. At last complete to her satisfaction, a perfect multicoloured sphere of glowing light the size of a baseball was clutched in her hand. After admiring the chaotic kaleidoscope of colours shimmering over its perfectly round surface, she turned back to the man still on the ground.
“Well my friend, unfortunately I can't play with you right now. Sad I know, maybe another time. But don't let that get you down, here's a consolation prize.” reaching down she pushed the sphere into the man's chest. Going rigid with pain, the man let out only a choked gasp as the sphere was absorbed into his body. He then went limp as he fell completely unconscious. Straitening up, the woman wiped an arm across her forehead and gazed down at her handy work.
“That was harder than I predicted it would be.” she thought to herself “Ah well, I'll check up on him later. Should have plenty of time.” with pleased smile, the Cleric of Chaos Macavity vanished into the night.
